Brian Dowdall
BALTIMORE, MD -- OCTOBER 12, 2015: Visionary artists are self-taught, display a unique vision in their work, and came to their art outside of traditional paths like art school.
Brian Dowdall paints mythical animals and spirits in bold colors on discarded cardboard. His childhood in Montana instilled a deep love of nature, and his Catholic upbringing created an obsessive fear of Hell. He suffered a nervous breakdown at age nine, but considers the experience pivotal in the way he sees the world.
âWhen youâre boxed in, then the wall cracks, thatâs when the light comes in,â Dowdall explains. âThatâs when you see the vision, when you see the art.â â¦. (photo by Andre Chung for The Washington Post)
